House CZ by SAMI Architectos

Posted by Raymond Mueller in Gardening Today

A quiet contemporary home overlooks the Azorean coast in the middle of the great Altantic.   The House CZ by SAMI Architectos feels as peaceful and isolated as the rarity of its plot, one that few world travelers ever get to see.  House CZ is perched on a hill on the tiny island of Ilha do Pico, part of the Azores archipelago that is located roughly half way between Portugal and Nova Scotia.  This home takes advantage of the rich natural environment on Pico, where pine trees and native grasses surround an open field that is tended to by grazing sheep.

The design of House CZ focuses on subtlety and a desire to merge with the hilly topography of Ilha do Pico.  The single-story structure comprises four internal sections that can be opened to the outer environment.    The northern section overlooks the coast in the distance, while the southern section peers into the contours of the hills above.  Based on the direction of the wind and the climate within the home, these sections can be opened to allow the natural outer flow to maintain comfort.  Unlike the black wooden exterior, the interior is white on all sides, given color by the furnishings and guests within the home.  This balance between clean modernity and the natural landscape is well-maintained, as the windows of House CZ make the Azorean island the art that adorns its walls.

Water Water Everywhere, but Cold Only, for the Moment

Posted by Evelyn Tapscott in Gardening Posts

It is a good news/bad news sort of day. The good news is that plumber installed the toilet, the faucet, and the water filter. The sink and toilet work! I have water! Wonderful!!

The bad news is that there is no HOT water. The plumber had suggested moving the water heater from under the sink to the basement. The water heater now lives on a suspended platform a few feet under the ceiling. (So pretty, I know.)

In its new location, drainage is better, there’s more room under the sink, and if the water heater ever blows, damage would happen to the basement instead of my lovely office.

If only construction were so simple. You see, there is no outlet near the little platform and it’s an ELECTRIC heater.

Appears two Acer seeds have germinated and i only brought the trays in on Sat. Both trays are in humid condition in propagator but am very surprized at earley germination. Packet refers to spasmodic germination over 9 to 12 months and both trays hold 5 seed,s each. Started the process on 6th of october 2011, in 3 stages, soaking, then humid conditions, then extreme cold for 8 wks. Both trays in warmth now. Very excited will keep all posted on progress. Take care Tony

Are you ready to meet Karpett that is an awesome bench, and a cot, and a chair, and a mat at the same time and these all is rolled into one? I mean it, you’ve got me right. The following cutie was created by Parisian company 5.5 Designers Studio. I love this piece of fun!

Well, to tell the truth, we deal with a black electrical tape that is cute, and useful. And I love the leather belt straps that keeps it rolled up when we need.

What a brilliant idea! To create a multifunctional piece of furniture that looks like a tape-carrier. B
