I thought I would drop you all a quick line, in case you don’t listen to world news, about the Convict Election.
After a day of voting, it’s a hung parliament, which I think may be a first for us! The Welsh expat Julia Gillard and her Labor minions lost several seats, Budgie-smuggling Liberal Tony Abbott won a few, there are four Independents lined up to take seats, and we have …
Our very first Green in the House of Reps! Adam Bandt upstaged the Labor candidate to take the seat of Melbourne [VIC], which has been held by the Labor party for 104 years. Greens voters all over the country are ecstatic and none more so than Greens leader and Senator Bob Brown. The Greens have only existed since 1992 and were on the receiving end of several favourable swings this election.
Our most famous seat/electorate, Eden-Monaro [NSW], has long been a bellwhether seat. It is an electorate full of swinging voters, and for the last 40 years whoever wins Eden-Monaro goes on to win the election. It’s gone to Labor this time.
A record has been set for the youngest person in the House of Reps – Liberal Wyatt Roy became the Member for Longman [QLD] at age 20. Sticking with Wyatts and firsts, Ken Wyatt became the first ever indigenous Australian in the Lower House, as Member for Hasluck [WA].
With around 80,000 votes still to be counted, this is Pip reporting for GoY News. (Do you think I should become a journalist? I’d quite like to.)
