If you have an interest in vintage posters – or the walls in your home are looking especially bare – shop more than 10,000 original vintage posters offered by exhibitors from six continents when the International Vintage Poster Fair returns to San Francisco Friday through next Sunday.
Posters from the 1890s to the 1980s, including food and liquor advertisements, film, travel, transportation and international events – in popular styles like Art Deco and Modernism to classic Art Nouveau and Victorian images – have all been vetted for authenticity.
This year, the theme for the feature exhibition is “Sex Sells!”
“The role of sex appeal in advertising has been around for years,” says Gail Chisholm, one of the fair’s producers and owner of Chisholm Gallery of New York City. “The core notion has always been there, but you see the different interpretations in the posters from each decade.”
Prices for the posters range from around $200 to $150,000 and up, but the majority are in the $200 to $5,000 range. Here are some of Chisholm’s tips for choosing and framing posters:
